Off Modern is a new collective of artists, curators, promoters and writers who take a lateral view of art, music, aesthetics and culture. Instead of just seeking to recuperate the well-known and well-documented trends of the past one hundred years, Off Modern explores and celebrates the forgotten and misinterpreted artistic movements. Through this we seek to discover and hail the advent of new ones. Off modern is an easily accessible platform for the promotion of art, literature and music. Our base, Corsica Studios, will work as the focal point for our activities. Our monthly nights seek to redefine the relationship between art and music; no more music influenced by art, but music as an art form; no more art as separate from music. Each night will feature a group exhibition of work from young artists based across London as well as performances from up and coming bands. We seek to expose artist’s work to people who may not otherwise see it, (or have an interest in it,) and to give them a different type of space to work with, as an easier entry point for people wishing to exhibit outside of the gallery system. In conjunction with the club night we will be putting out a monthly ’zine featuring works that tie into the Off Modern as well as exploring what it means as a concept. The ’zine will work very closely with the night, with artists talking about the work they are exhibiting and the things that inspire them as well as interviews with the bands. The scope of the ‘zine will be as large as possible whilst still maintaining cohesion with the aesthetic and artistic basis of the night. Off Modern is about reigniting the feeling of excitement around art and music that was present in the area some years ago; our manifesto is not to be cooler than anyone, but to be exciting, fun, fresh and inspiring.
